Your Own Personal, Portable Dietitian

Jennifer, a harried mom with little time to think about what to eat or what to buy, wants to feed her family well and, at the same time, take off the last ten pounds she never lost after having kids. Chad is overweight and has high cholesterol. Since he has a family history of heart disease, his doctor advised him to improve his eating habits and increase his physical activity to reduce his risks. Monica and Todd, who work round-the-clock in highpressure jobs, are nutritionally challenged because they eat most meals at their desks — mostly takeout.

With little time for fitness, their weight is slowly creeping up. They want to make changes but don’t know where to begin. All of these people — and thousands like them — illustrate the troubling statistics* that show that 90 percent of men and 70 percent of women in America will eventually become overweight! Jennifer is making a conscious effort to get rid of all the junk food in her house and cook dinner for her family most nights.

Meanwhile, Chad joins a gym (although he really can’t afford the dues) and vows to not eat red meat or indulge in his nightly bowl of ice cream. As for Todd and Monica, they think more take-out Chinese food and fewer burgers and fries will be the answer for them. Despite their good intentions, these strategies may not be realistic or sustainable and probably won’t hold up over the long term.

To help Jennifer, Chad and the rest of us find a better way to approach food and good health, Elisa Zied, M.S., R.D., C.D.N, has written So What Can I Eat?! How to Make Sense of the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans and
Make Them Your Own
(Wiley © 2006, $14.95 paperback,
www.SoWhatCanIEat.com). As a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Zied wants to help more people discover how easy it really is to learn to eat right and move more.

Most of us understand that the Guidelines are based on science, and incorporate elements that make for a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet. But the Guidelines alone are hard to put into practice without some help. In So What Can I Eat?!, Zied explains everything in a way that makes it all clear and doable. She provides solutions to common dilemmas and offers very practical ideas anyone can incorporate into their busy lives.

Zied does not expect anyone to be perfect. “You don’t need to just eat the right calories,” Zied tells us, “you need to eat your calories r i g h t. We can all improve upon what we’re doing now to achieve our desired results — whether that is weight loss, better nutritional status, more balance in food selections, more energy, management or prevention of diet-related conditions, or just getting a grip on how much to eat in a day.”

In her book, Zied begins by outlining seven easy steps to help anyone better understand the Guidelines and find ways to make some subtle but important lifestyle changes. For instance, instead of asking people to forego any favorite foods, or eliminate or severely restrict food groups, she shows people how they can incorporate any food in a balanced and healthful way. “Start by finding the ideas that address your particular challenges and apply those in a way that will work for you,” Zied suggests. “Later you can tackle other challenges and further create your own ideal healthy approach to food and exercise.”

The book includes two weeks of menu plans (14 days of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, & snacks) so that getting started is easy. Plus there are 50 delicious original recipes (such as Crunchy Chicken Nuggets, Asian Crab Cakes, Brown Rice Pudding, and Wholesome Sugar Cookies) that highlight many of the key foods emphasized in the Guidelines. The sample menus encourage eating enjoyment without deprivation. Charts, food lists, exercise advice, and lots of great tips make the book user-friendly each step of the way.

So, whether it’s learning how to add more fruit or whole grains to any meal, or figuring out how to increase physical activity in a painless and even enjoyable way, Zied offers sensible solutions. The tips on dining out without giving in and ideas for how to move more at work (without losing your job!) are also helpful.

Learn from the past…get support…fuel frequently (keep healthy snacks on hand)…plan for plateaus…give yourself some wiggle room… These are among the recommendations that make this program one that Todd, Jennifer, or anyone will find easy to adapt to their own needs and stick to for the long haul. Using So What Can I Eat?! is like having your own personal, portable dietitian to help you become a healthier, happy you.
